AI GPU Cluster Cabling: How Many Fibers Does a 1,024-GPU Pod Need?
Share
A 1,024-GPU pod built as a non-blocking, rail-optimized two-tier fabric needs about 2,048 400G links in its compute network alone: one link per GPU to a leaf switch, and an equal number from the leaves to the spines. At 8 active fibers per 400G link, that is about 16,400 active fibers, or about 24,600 fiber positions when every link uses an MPO-12 connector. One published reference design with 1,016 GPUs lists 1,020 GPU-to-leaf cables and 1,024 leaf-to-spine cables. Storage and management networks come on top.
These figures are estimates from public reference designs and simple arithmetic, not a design for a particular site. The method below lets you redo the calculation for your own cluster.
How a GPU Pod Is Wired
Modern AI clusters are built from 8-GPU servers grouped into scalable units (SUs). In one published GPU-vendor reference architecture, an SU is 32 servers (256 GPUs), and four SUs make the full pod. That design uses four separate networks:
| Network | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Compute fabric | GPU-to-GPU traffic across servers; the largest fiber count |
| Storage fabric | Servers to shared storage |
| In-band management | Cluster services and access |
| Out-of-band management | Device management ports |
Rail-optimized means each of the eight GPU network ports in a server connects to a different leaf switch (a "rail"). GPU 1 in every server in the SU lands on leaf 1, GPU 2 on leaf 2, and so on. Traffic between servers on the same rail is one switch hop away; traffic between rails or SUs crosses the spine.

Step 1: Count the Links
In a non-blocking two-tier fabric, every leaf has as many uplinks to the spines as downlinks to the GPUs. So:
- GPU-to-leaf links = number of GPUs (one 400G port per GPU)
- Leaf-to-spine links = the same number again
- Compute links ≈ 2 × GPUs
The reference design's compute-fabric table confirms the pattern:
| SUs | Servers | GPUs | Leaf | Spine | GPU-to-leaf cables* | Leaf-to-spine cables |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 31 | 248 | 8 | 4 | 252 | 256 |
| 2 | 63 | 504 | 16 | 8 | 508 | 512 |
| 3 | 95 | 760 | 24 | 16 | 764 | 768 |
| 4 | 127 | 1,016 | 32 | 16 | 1,020 | 1,024 |
*Includes the fabric-manager connections. The design keeps 32 server positions per SU but removes one server to make room for fabric-management connectivity, which is why the pod has 1,016 GPUs rather than 1,024.
Step 2: Fibers per Link
A 400G short-reach link of the type used in these fabrics runs four lanes of 100G each way. The transceiver uses an MPO-12/APC connector, but only 8 of the 12 fibers carry light: 4 transmit and 4 receive. Switch-side twin-port modules carry two such 400G ports, each with its own MPO-12/APC. Multimode versions reach 50 m on OM4 or 30 m on OM3, with two patch panels assumed in the link.
So per 400G link:
- Active fibers: 8
- Fiber positions (MPO-12): 12
See the 400G/800G transceiver cabling map for other module types.
Step 3: The Fiber Count
Estimate. Compute fabric only.
| Case | Compute links | Active fibers (× 8) | MPO-12 fiber positions (× 12) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ideal 1,024 GPUs (2 × 1,024) | 2,048 | 16,384 | 24,576 |
| Reference pod, 1,016 GPUs (1,020 + 1,024) | 2,044 | 16,352 | 24,528 |
Per SU in the reference design: 252 + 256 = 508 links, or 4,064 active fibers.

Step 4: From Links to Trunks
If the links run through structured cabling (patch panels and trunks) rather than point-to-point cords, the count can be converted into trunks. A 144-fiber trunk built from 12 MPO-12 legs carries 12 such 400G links. If every one of the reference pod's 2,044 compute links ran over trunks of this kind:
2,044 ÷ 12 ≈ 170.3 → 171 × 144F trunks (an upper-bound estimate).
In practice, many GPU-to-leaf links stay inside a row as short cords, and Base-8 or MPO-16 trunk designs change the arithmetic. See Base-8 vs Base-12 vs Base-16, 800G MPO-16 link design and structured cabling vs point-to-point.
What This Means for Ordering
| Decision | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| APC polish | The transceiver connector is MPO-12/APC; mixing APC and UPC will not mate correctly. See APC vs UPC |
| Connector gender | Transceivers have pins, so cords that plug into them are female (unpinned) |
| Multimode reach | 50 m OM4 / 30 m OM3, with two patch panels assumed; longer runs need single-mode modules |
| Lengths | Thousands of links: measure by rail and row, not per cable; see MPO trunk length calculation |
| Labels | Thousands of identical-looking cords: label every end; see fiber cable labeling |
| Spares | Add spares per length bin; a planning choice, not a standard |

Frequently Asked Questions
How many fibers does a 1,024-GPU cluster need?
For the compute fabric of a non-blocking two-tier design, about 2,048 400G links × 8 active fibers ≈ 16,400 active fibers, or about 24,600 fiber positions on MPO-12 connectors. This is an estimate; storage and management networks add more.
What is a rail-optimized network?
Each of the eight GPU ports in a server connects to a different leaf switch, so GPU n in every server shares leaf n. Same-rail traffic is one hop; other traffic crosses the spine.
Why does a 400G link use 8 fibers on a 12-fiber MPO?
A 400G short-reach link uses four 100G lanes in each direction: 4 transmit and 4 receive fibers. The other 4 positions in the MPO-12 are unused.
What connector do AI cluster transceivers use?
The 400G short-reach modules in these fabrics use MPO-12 with APC polish. The transceiver has the pins, so the cord is female.
How many 144-fiber trunks would a 1,024-GPU pod need?
If every compute link ran over 144F trunks with 12 MPO-12 legs, about 171 for the reference pod's 2,044 links. That is an upper bound; many short links use direct cords.
Huawellux Cabling for AI Clusters

Every Huawellux product receives end-face visual inspection under a 400x video microscope and is tested for insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) before it ships. Interferometric end-face geometry (fiber height, coplanarity, end-face angle and radius) is checked by sample-based testing in standard production, and 100% interferometer testing of a batch is available on request. Dust caps are fitted on every connector, and a formal test report is available on request.
Huawellux replies to inquiries within 24 hours. Custom orders typically take 1–5 business days to complete production, with final timing confirmed case by case in the quotation. For special/custom requirements, MOQ is 2 km of fiber length. Standard listed patch cords have no formal MOQ. The sample fee is credited against the bulk order.
